Here in Houston, we’ve always had the chains – Krispy Kreme, Dunkin Donuts, what have you – but they don’t have as big of a presence as Shipley’s, which has ruled the roost locally since the late 1930s.

(In fact, Krispy Kreme was driven out of town in 2006, mostly thanks to these guys.)

Unlike the super-heavy Krispy Kreme donuts, Shipley’s are made with a different kind of flour. They’re light, fluffy, and they just about melt in your mouth.

They have lots and lots of glazed and iced donuts, apple fritters, bear claws, filled eclairs, plus, those fabulous Texan/Czech treats…kolaches.

Some are even open 24-hours, for those of us that get a craving for the delicious little clouds of sugar at ungodly hours.
