Ellington was built in 1917, trained pilots for WWI, was rebuilt by Congress in 1940 to train WWII pilots, was a navigation school until the late 1950s, and was finally made public in 1984.
So why visit? To go to the annual Wings Over Houston air show, of course.
I went as a volunteer for my local Rotary chapter, and a lot of other charities come out to sell concessions to raise money. It’s a great place for families. Lots of cool planes on the ground and in the air, plus a lot of educational stuff. Some years they even reenact Pearl Harbor.
