Black Day in July by danimatian

I just read that Jack Ward did not even know the location of his sculpture when he created it. It was never intended to be a memorial for the 1967 riots. It just happens to stand in a park created at the epicenter of the riot.

This area around Gordon Park was once many store fronts up and down 12th Street (Modern day Rosa Parks) but after a police raid on a blind pig / after hours joint, the riots started, and Detroit changed for the worse. A lot of people died in the days that followed. The spirit of Detroit never fully recovered from those dark days.
