Dettifoss

I can never decide if Dettifoss or Skogafoss is my favourite Icelandic waterfall. With Dettifoss, it’s the sheer power of the water amongst the desolation of the landscape. It’s breathtaking.

Getting to the waterfall can be a hassle and the road is often closed. A few tips: choose a time when the road is open, take a high car and exercise appropriate caution.

And while you’re at it: try and not let nature suffer too much. The banks of the canyon were in quite bad shape last time I was there. There are walkways now so you shouldn’t have to rip into the ground too much..

That said, I just have to recommend this place. This waterfall is really impressive and the sound from it is deafening.
