Worth visiting!
The first time I went to this place
I was going to Cemetery of the Evergreens, and I managed to miss that cemetery by a bit. Instead ended up in this cemetery, which is only separated from Evergreens by a chain link fence with barbed wire and the Reformation.
Most Holy Trinity is a Catholic cemetery, and seems to have fewer of the ostentatious grave markers that appear at Greenwood or Woodlawn. A lot of the markers were made of metal and had either rich natural patinas or had past that stage to rust away in beautiful ways. There were makeshift crosses built from plumbing pipes and joints, and old wooden crosses decaying. The rotting wood put me in much more of a contemplative mood than more permanent structures do. The most curious part of the place were the number of statues of Mary and saints sticking up from the ground from their knees. I don’t know if the they have sunk or if the ground was build up around them. The effect was quite eerie.
If you would like to visit, it is across the street from Wilson Avenue “L” train stop.
