Using the option of taking your car (if you have one) onto the ferry is also a good idea. It allows you much more freedom to explore in the north. Apart from that taking busses is probably more expensive in Icland and Norway than than buying gas for a private car. So if a couple of people would be sharing it that would be a much more economical option. I don’t know about bus prises in the Scottish Isles and the Faeroe Islands but I guess that what one could see there would be severely limited if one wouldn’t have a car..
