Laugavegur

A great hike running from Landmannalaugar in the north to Þórsmörk in the south. It can take you anything from a couple of days to a week, depending on your vigor and in how much of a hurry you are. The scenery is great and you hike through lava, mountains, creeks, plains, hills, deserts and even forest while in the good company of glaciers.

Most people hike south towards the lush Þórsmörk but personally I think that Landmannalaugar is nicer and therefore rather like to walk towards it. Both locations also offer other hikes. Many experienced hikers add the “Fimmvörðuháls” hike for example and then end up in (or start in) Skógar

I wholeheartedly recommend this hike or a comparable one to tourists as it is both a better and a more ecological way to get a taste of Iceland than the usual driving around.
