Why I want to go to this place  — 1 year ago

My fiance and I are planning to get married here and spend our honeymoon here. We want to be relaxed and explore a bit—I’ve never been to Italy but the pictures I have seen and stories I have heard about the Amalfi Coast sounded like the perfect location to get married! Yay!

    Worth visiting!

...“Wow!” Was the first word that bounced through my mind as my friend and I were rounding the final bend that descended into the town. I wish we had more time to explore, but we were doing “the drive” along the Amalfi Coast and only had the day. I’m still absolutley amazed at how the Italians are able to get those buildings to stick against those seaside cliffs.

    Someday, someday…

    Positano  — 2 years ago

I was working on an excavation in Pompeii for a summer when a friend and I decided to go check out Amalfi. Of course, it was wonderful. The bus trip was not to be attempted by those who suffer from motion sickness!
On the way back from Amalfi, we hopped off the bus in Positano, walked down all those stairs from the road and paid the rather steep cost to be allowed onto the beach. We basked in the sun for, oh, about half an hour when out of nowhere, big black rain clouds rolled in and a severe lightening storm erupted. It was chaos! Everyone was stuffing their possessions into their beach bags, knocking over the umbrellas and running for shelter in the snack bars. So, our Positano day was cut a bit short. I did get some cool photos of the clouds hanging low over the terraced houses, though – I should really scan them one day!

Went on my honeymoon here almost 3 years ago. So gorgeous. Such good food. Rent a private book and take a ride to the private “Siren” islands. Could not be lovelier.

Be prepared to hike lots of steps down to the beach (then back up again), but it’s so beautiful and romantic!

    Not worth it!

It looks better from the coast road. A great place to drive past… but don’t bother stopping. Go on to Amalfi instead.

Used to be worth visiting... not so sure now  — 2 years ago

    Worth visiting!

I used to live in Naples, about 10 years ago. Positano, at the time, was lovely, relatively unspoilt.

I went back to the area (not Naples) on honeymoon in August, and have vowed never to return. I guess, on reflection, that I should have realised that the end of August was a silly time to go there (but, with the wife being a school teacher, what choice did we have but to get married in the summer).

If you go, I recommend going out of season, and definitely not in August, particularly not the latter part of it.
