I was born here, did some schooling here, used to live here and still work here.
Pietermaritzburg is interesting in the historical sense. It is named for Piet Retief and Gert Maritz, two Voortrekker leaders. They left the Cape (and British rule) to set up new republics in the Transvaal and Natal in the 1800s. Travelling in covered wagons drawn by oxen in much the same way as the USA west was opened. Today it is the capital of the Kwa-Zulu Natal province.

All of my mum’s side of the family are in Pietermaritzburg, so I’f definitely love to go back..it’s been over 10 years since I’ve seen them..
