The Battle Of Corydon-July 9th 1863 by Shawnsmusic
If you are looking for signs and all the hype of a big national military park, you won’t find it here. This battle with Morgan’s Raiders was overshadowed by both the Battle Gettysburg and the fall of Vicksburg. However, it was significant in that it was the only confrontation considered a battle within the state of Indiana.
Follow the main drag through town and through the square. The first capital of Indiana was located in Corydon and is in the square. You will pass the fairgrounds and go up a rather high hill (for this area at least) curving around just a bit. In a short time you will see a park sign on your left side. Pull in and drive back to the parking area.
There are several interesting things to see here including the anchor chain from the Alice Dean (boat Morgan aquired for Ohio River crossing-then sunk it), a cannon, and some monuments. The important thing to remember is that the Home Guard put up a strong fight with their squirrel rifles and whatever they could find. Morgan won of course, but 8 of his men were killed as well.
The Morgans Raid trail starts down on the Ohio River across from Brandenburg Kentucky and goes right through here.Follow it and you’ll be amazed where all Morgans men travelled.
