Amarillo

My family is in a small town about an hour outside of Amarillo, where Amarillo is the “big city.” I have passed through Amarillo many times but rarely stopped.

My mom had a heart attack and was airlifted to Amarillo. I found Amarillo to be one of the kindest places I’ve been to in a while. The nurses and doctors were so nice and explained everything. The hotel people were nice and understood that I was a bit more scatterbrained than usual due to the stress. The restaurant people were nice and let me take my time. Everyone was nice and polite.

We would walk around the hospital district and fellow walkers would greet us or at least nod politely. The ducks were bold and the local dogs friendly.

If you’re going to live in the Panhandle, you have to get used to the flatness of the place. After a while, though, you begin to see the stark beauty in the skies.

Amarillo was, and always is for my visits, dry and brown. You have to appreciate a different kind of beauty, not the kind from lush greens, but the beauty found in dry living conditions. It’s almost the beauty of the desert.

While Amarillo will never be my favorite place to visit, I like it.

Came to Amarillo in the early 70’s, it took me 35 years to leave, and its the best thing I ever did. I have many fond memories however of specific places and people, not to mention that the majority of my family have lived and died there. Unfortunately, I have to agree with the majority of the posts here. Amarillo, unless you are driving down I-40 or in the Amarillo College area or some of the new housing developments out west of town, its just plain filthy! It seems to have a large population of old burnt out drug addicts and 35+ year olds still living with their Mothers! not to mention many religious hypocrites. Every direction you look on any given day and you will see hospital scrubs, people wear them in public like a badge of honor, quite comical I think. Sadly, for many of the residents there, their imaginations don’t extend past the city limits. There is absolutely nothing to do there so people just settle for what few amenities there are. Be sure to watch your step while in Amarillo as the cops shoot first and ask questions later.

amarillo..tx is the worst place to live or visit..to live hear means the most unfriendly and rude people in the u.s…there is nothing to do and see..everything is brown and dried because of the lack of rain..there is nothing to do there unless you want to go see a movie or go out to dinner..horriable i lived there for 3 years and it was the worst years of my life..dont waste your money or raise your kids here ..they will become stuck up and very uneducated..the people are terriable…i moved back to michigan to get away ..dont waste your time or money..visiting..even the people who were born there want out..

I lived here from about ‘82-’87. It was great as a child growing up going to the Civic Center and Canyon. Wouldn’t want to live there as an adult, though!

This place is a hellhole. The people who love it here are either (a) rightwing assholes who love living in a monoculture or (b) people who have constructed a private safety zone for themselves and are afraid to leave.
