I have lived in huntsville off and on since 1995, and it is a surprising oasis of culture and technology in an otherwise underwritten alabama. This place, probably has the largest number of rocket scientists per capita than any city in the country.

In result, there are lots of transplants to the area, which sets Huntsville and the surrounding area apart from misconceptions of the south. I must say, that the Tennessee Valley has made amazing bounds in the last 13 years, and it appears that it will continue to develop into a truly metropolitan location.

The cost of living is quite low compared to other cities of it’s size, and you have some beautifully lush areas, thanks to the climate. The place continues to develop, so if you have interest in settling here, I’d suggest doing it now before other people get the idea and it becomes more expensive to live here. If you want to buy a house this is the place to do it. When my parents moved here from the D.C. area, their house doubled in size, and their mortgage didn’t.

I hope to be home owner in Huntsville soon, but for now, I have high hopes for more independent restaurants and bakeries!

This is my home... by cactusfrog8

I grew up in Huntsville, and couldn’t wait to leave…so I left and hated every minute of it, so I came home. Huntsville isn’t like the rest of Alabama…its a town full of rocket scientist!!! The only thing I would change here is the art scene…there isn’t much, though there is a small effort, but its still not enough.

My experience by ladysouljah

Huntsville is full of diversity, which an out-of-towner might expect it to be lacking. The fine dining atmosphere’s flourish in restaurant such as k syrah-syrah, salmon bar & grill (formerly green bottle grill) and Pollies. The city is at the bottome of Monte Sano, which is a perfect scenary location if you like to go hiking or mountain biking…only a half hour away from the tennessee boarder, about an hour away from nacalula falls, and a great location if you like to travel to places like birmingham, atlanta, or even new orleans.

When I was living there, every weekend, I would drive to the Flint River, there is a family that lives at the bottome of the river, upon arriving, they drive you to the top of the river and drop you with your choice of a kayak or a canoe. A great day trip to cruise down the river, with a snack or fishing pole in hand. By the time the sun falls, you reach the bottom of the river and voila! You are back at your car on your way home….ah the days!!!
