Worked there 2 summers. Loved every second. Living downtown I would walk everywhere, paths led to places you couldn’t dream of in other major cities. And regularly ran into wild Moose in the city. It’s the kind of place that if you like a city culture, but also like the ability to get away, you can do it all and never get more than 10 minutes away. easily one of my top 5 favorite places
I lived here in my early teens, and I loved it. I wish I could go back and do it all again. It was such a great place! NOT for those that can’t take the cold…or the dark, for that matter.
be sure to not just hang out in downtown, the touristy area, but also check out spenard (a neighborhood around spenard rd) for a real slice of anchorage / alaska culture. it used to be a lot seedier (read: more fun) and actually had brothels up until a few years ago. still a ton of great bars and restaurants. koots is a slice of life and recommended for the experience if nothing else, and blues central and the buckaroo club are a blast too.
If you don’t like snow, don’t go in the winter. At all. Everyday in winter is snowy, and most of the time, the snow stays around until spring. So if you do come, be sure to bring warm clothing.
