Reynosa
A Texas border town with a difference! Across the border from Hidalgo, Texas and 8 miles from McAllen, Texas; Reynosa is a different kind of border town. Topographically it is very hilly and it gives the town a special charm. Despite all of the hullabuloo about Nuevo Laredo (a 4 hour drive from Reynosa) this city of probably about a Half-Million people now is much safer than even it’s neighbor Matamoros. It is just enough off the beaten track that the drug traffic problem has not hurt it. The recent hurricane did cause a few problems here but nothing too bad. It has wonderful restaurants and discos that entertain the entire Rio Grande Valley on weekends at very reasonable prices. Calle Hidalgo is a wonderful closed streets that runs off of the charming central plaza and is filled with shops and booths and a nice market. The people are very friendly here and you can leave your car in a convenient parking lot and walk across the bridge easily from Hidalgo. It’s my 4’th favorite city in Mexico. Great for a border town and it’s Zona Rosa and Zona Roja are both very nice. Check out the Casa Vieja and the La Mansion del Prado restaurants for starters. The pretty new toll highway to Monterrey is absolutely wonderful!
