A review of this place: Cambodiana
By Carolyn @ The Kingston Guide
Cambodiana may well be my favourite restaurant in the city. You go there for the food, and only the food. In fact, it makes no difference whether you eat this stuff in a gutter or a gourmet kitchen, it will be a delightful moment of Thai / Cambodian food bliss. That much I can guarantee.
Cambodiana is located in an unassuming hole in the wall on Brock Street across from Hotel Dieu Hospital. The decor is lackluster. The service is basic. And there isn’t a heck of a lot of room to move around – it’s packed with people and chairs and food, just as it should be. Got that? You don’t go for a phenomenal feng shui experience. You go for the food.
First off, #5 (Stir fried chicken with lemon grass) is amazing. Take my word for it. Or the Panang Curry. Oh the Panang. This is the kind of Panang that you dream about years in the future. It’s the kind of stuff that makes you wish you could have take-out from Cambodiana at any time, day or night, anywhere in the world. I’m pretty sure this will fuel the development of the teleporter.
The portions at Cambodiana are huge and the prices reasonable. Nothing on the menu is over $9. They offer a speedy delivery service as well, and again, the delivery portions are huge, if not even bigger than what you get in the restaurant. A small order of soup will certainly last you for a few meals, and all for about $7!
That said, there are a lot of fine Thai and Cambodian joints in the city. Wok-In and Phnom Penh are also fantastic. However, on sheer taste-bud merriment, Cambodiana wins this round.
We recommend: The panang curry of course, or the #5 special, or the sweet & sour soup or the green curry or the chicken with coriander …. just get obese and try it all.
