I stayed at the Adriatico Guest House, ICTP. The Grigano Bay area overlooked by the Adriatico Guest house and the Miramare Castle were my favourite places.

The first time I went to this place
... I was a child. Two of my great-aunts live there, and several of my cousins.
A former city-state on the Adriatic Sea, Trieste still shows the bones of its medieval former self. A beautiful city, it is not part of the main landmass of Italy, but sits on the Eastern shore of the Adriatic, surrounded by Slovenia.
I spent a little time there when I was 21, and found it to be fast, like the Sydney I live in, but smaller and much older.
Being a border city, it is a mix of cultures, and has a great nightlife.

Au Pairing in Trieste
I lived in Trieste as an au pair for almost a year. I know most things about the city so ask away. It’s really quite nice and in the summer, it’s great if you’re a fan of the sea and there’s a nice rock beach. Lots of sailing going on, some cute bars, very “old” population though. Very picturesque. It’s definitely better than Venice in my opinion…and it’s not tourist run, gives you a bit of a break if you want to get out from the mobs of tourist.

went by accident
I was planning only to transit Trieste on the way to Slovenia, but arrived late in the evening and cursed having to stay overnight…in the morning, the city centre was quite a nice discovery! If it wasn’t so close to Venice, I think Trieste would be a big attraction for tourists, but Venice does tend to take the limelight away from this underrated city.
