Marseille has a stunning setting, with a backdrop of mountains and its Vieux Port entrance guarded by two huge forts. There are lots of steep streets so make use of the bus network or the metro to get around. From here you can take boat trips out to the nearby islands or along the coast to see the Calanques.

I love Marseille! by T

It is gritty and a bit dodgy in places but it’s colourful and charismatic in a way that the other towns I visited just aren’t. I would choose Marseille over the rich resorts any day.

amazing. gorgeous beautiful. every single thing you think of when you imagine the cote d’azur happens here. kids jump off high rocks, the sand is white, the sea is glowing turquoise. you can see the chateau d’if (count of monte critso), and beautiful old buildings. there’s a fancy boardwalk full of good looking people, and all sorts of perfect, wonderful, gorgeous other things to do.

we stayed in a little inn up on a hill, and we ate scones for breakfast and slept with the windows open. everything smelled like lavender and sounded like cicadas, and it was perfect!

i also managed to meet an attractive moroccan accounting student. go figure!
