Aleppo

Today was an early start and a long drive across Turkey to the Syrian border. Its late now and we are very tired. The journey was fantastic and the scenery most unexpected with mountains and green fir tree forests everywhere. As we finally reached the Syrian border, the scenery changed to be just like the high passes in the Lake District. We had a bizarre duty free shopping experience which felt like we were in Heathrow airport duty free shops in the middle of nowhere. We then took about 1 hour to get through all the border crossings and headed for Aleppo. This is now truly the middle east. Its hustling and bustling with noises and smells to bombard the senses. Crossing the road is a challenge and the car horns are unexpected! Looking forward to exploring the old city tomorrow and heading for the souks. Off back to our hotel which looks like a castle inside, and for some shut eye. sorry we dont always have time to answer your emails personally – we often dont have long to check our email.

love this city and all of syria. disturbingly, part of what adds beauty to the ancient buildings is the wooden lattice work meant to hide women from public view. syria, in general, is an amazing place to visit.

Visits the souks! They go on for miles. Also, stay in that famous hotel, where TH Lawrence stayed…can’t remember the name. Also! meet up with the guy in the bar who offers to drive you around in a 1957 Studebaker…his name is on the tip of my mind….
