The last time I went to this place  — 11 months ago

    Worth visiting!

Well I’m still here due to leave in a a couple of weeks…

First…stay away from BBQ Tonight. I know, I know it’s a “posh” place or whatever, but I must say service absolutely terrible! Well not to mention that I got food poisoning and spent the next two days on a BRAT diet.

CafeFlo…hands down best steak house in the city. Service is excellent, and the owner and manager (two different people) are amazing!

Presto Cafe okay well here’s the thing carts, kiosk, all those things will make you weary in this city if you’re a traveler; however, Presto well after trying them once I’m hooked. They have a few select locations they have their stalls at. I’ve only been to the one at BBQ Tonight and Park Towers (the mall). They have one more near an import market. Can’t recall the name now.

Coffee Hangout spots… Well I only liked Ciao so kept going there until I forgot about the rest… DON’T order the Chicken Caesar Wrap you will thank me later. Have the fruit smoothies they’re pretty good, and if you like boba (tapioca drinks) this is not the place for it. They have it; however, the tapioca seems a bit too hard.

Hookah/Shisha/Nargil – Zeenan! Okay I must admit I’m pretty biased about this place because I love it so much. There’s a kebab roll that’s made in paratha that’s really good; but more so the Chicken Tika is AWESOME! Shashlik is pretty good too, and so is the beef boti.

That’s all I can think of now, but if you need more info just message me and i’ll see if I can help you out.

My two month tour here is now almost at an end… Dubai here I come…

full of contradictions  — 2 years ago

    Worth visiting!

Everywhere you look it’s a mixture—new cars and donkeys on the road, brand new hotels and office buildings next to ones that should be condemned, modern & sophisticated next to old but still glamorous or just plain old, people dressed up for a fancy restaurant and beggars. The Indian Ocean is beautiful and seems somehow like the edge of the world, wild and untamed; you can ride a camel on the beach or buy roasted corn from someone cooking it on the sidewalk if you dare. I went in July and it was very hot and humid so stay somewhere with air conditioning. The city seemed to have a golden glow because the sunlight was filtered through a haze/clouds. The Muslim call to prayer echoing through the streets was beautiful. You’re not in Kansas anymore, so to speak, you definitely feel like you’re in a foreign place. Great place to buy jewellry. Unbelievable sights like a city bus so crammed with people that they were sticking out the windows or sitting on top. The bazaars are great for buying souveneirs. I was the only blond white person with a group of Muslim people so got a lot of stares, even though I had switched to local dress. When sightseeing outside of Karachi they arranged for an armed guard to go with us, not sure if that was just for my benefit, as there had been kidnappings in the rural regions of several Americans. Don’t try to drive there! Hire a local driver or taxi and hang on. Inserting a sane driver into the mix would cause chaos. The dogs are even different over there, they all look the same as each other but not like any we have in the West. Overall a fascinating place.

It is the city of oxymorons and contradictions. There is no place in the world like in Karachi. One may find that they have no time when one lives in Karachi but there is nothing actually to do. It is portrayed as one of the most dangerous cities in the world, however, there is no where in the world that I have ever felt safe like I do in Karachi. It is home and always will be irrespective of wherever I live. There are some amazing places to visits and things to do in Karachi. AND nobody parties like the people in Karachi… contrary to the popular belief Karachi has quite a happening nightlife you just need to know the right people.

I got married in Karachi  — 2 years ago

Karachi is a great place that I miss a lot. My wife is there right now visiting her family and I wish I was with them.

You should really know people if you are going to visit here because the people really make the city, and you can get through all the tour guide sights in two or three days. If you go be prepared for a crazy city bursting at the seams.

I lived in Karachi for 5 years, from age 5 to 10. It is a great city, and I really love it (although I don’t really remember much about it). I’d be willing to answer questions, but I don’t know how much use I’d be.

I love it as much as New Yorker loves New York and I have always used this analogy for explaining Karachi to people in US

Karachi is a cosmopolitan concrete jungle, bounded on the South by the Arabian sea, with a dangerously turbulent political climate that is almost redeemed by the perennial balmy weather and the delectable food available there in abundance.
