I studied in Mérida for 3 months last summer. It was amazing. Many of my friends are students at the ULA. I loved it there. I am going back next summer.

University town in the green mountains by Shani16

Lots of young people, who attend ULA (universidad de los andes) and others who make Merida their home. Has a “towny” feel to it. Make sure you eat trout, caught from the lakes in the mountains. Go up to the parramo, into the mountains. There are many little towns, very charming. Just go to the bus station and you are able to get anywhere rather cheaply. La Cucaracha is a dance club and a tradition if you go. These people never stop dancing! If you’re a girl, appearance matters! Dress up, you’ll get treated quite nicely. Go hear live trova music in a bar next to the school of engineering (just go).

Mérida's narrow streets and colonial architecture make it a great city to wander at your leisure, while the roaring rivers and rugged mountain terrain make it a prime base for some serious adventure. Thanks to the presence of the Universidad de los Andes (ULA), along with the budding tourist industry, Mérida has a great assortment of cafes, restaurants, bars, and discos. Despite the imposing snow-covered peaks that surround it, Mérida enjoys a mild, springlike climate year-round. Days are generally warm, although you'll probably need a light sweater or jacket at night. May through November is the rainy season, with August and September being the wettest months. (read article)
