Beirut
Rumor has it that despite the war, Lebanese people are still able to have a good time. Two weeks into the war, I was missing my regular hang out, Gemmayzeh, and I was missing my closest friends who have all evacuated. I went on a saturday night to one of the local pubs with a friend, we had drinks all night, people were quiet, laughing at war jokes, getting sad, then happy then angry, then swearing! It’s as if we are all manic depressive, hehe.
At one point, the bartender turned on the TV coz there was an explosion nearby, we all stared at the screen for 5 minutes then made him turn it off..reason why we left the house in the first place was to get AWAY from the TV set.
Despite the war, internal conflicts and everything in between, Beirut is still gorgeous, with all its ruins and common misconceptions… I love living here, and I’m not just saying that. Really. I could have left, but I didn’t, and I won’t :)

If I don’t get killed by islamist extremists for having blue eyes an Israeli airstrike is bound to do me in.
Beirut, I’d love to see you, but I’m afraid it’ll have to be in another lifetime.

I was born in Oregon but spent my first 5 years in Lebanon – seeing as how the my family is from Lebanon, it makes sense. I’ve been back a couple of times since the war ended, and every time I go it is more and more beautiful.
The pace there is so slow and relaxed – you wake up, have a nice breakfast, maybe visit with some people and listen to stories (we are such good storytellers), go walking, have lunch, take a nap, go see some sights or spend some time at the beach, come back, clean up, have dinner, go out for the evening. It’s just such a good way to be!

I dont know anything about Beirut. only Time magazine featured it as a “must see” spot in the world. And its worth goin bar hoppin there. As they say… But yeah thats the fun part, it sounds exotic to me, i dunno much about it, altho maybe before i got here i would have lonely planet or some reasearch work about the whole place…
