A quiet Austro-Hungarian town by pmedved
Most of the central part of Zagreb is exactly what you’d expect of a city that grew largely under Austro-Hungarian domination: the gothic cathedral and baroque churches, winding streets of the upper city, typical downtown architecture of the empire. There are also several unpleasant buildings from the period after WWII until independence (people like to blame this architecture on communism, but I’ve seen similar monstrosities in every part of the world). It is easy, however, to lose yourself in the upper town and forget you’re in the 21st century.
