This is a sweet little city that is nestled around the Ljubljanica river. Expect to see loads of cafes, markets, graffiti, and various architecture styles.

My favorite places for food were Piranske Soline (salt and salt chocolate), Zvezda (ice cream + cakes), and a small pizza by the slice restaurant next to the university and Kongresni trg square.

Also check out Metelkova city and the Celica hostel. Although I didn’t stay in the former prison hostel they do offer visits at 2pm daily. While the hostel is nice it isn’t super close to the city center, but that’s relative considering it’s not a big city.

Unfortunately my trip didn’t end on a high note as a man committed suicide in front of our train on the way home. It wasn’t even 5 minutes after leaving the station. The gloomy reality is that Slovenia has a very high suicide rate.

This tragedy enabled me to meet two other young women traveling alone – one from Croatia and one from Slovenia.

The city is charming and very much worth a visit.

In Ljubljana we spent a night in one of the Alibi Hostels next to the Ljubljanska. Although the rooms are not so cheap (‘twas 20 Euros per person for a bed) and prices do not contain breakfast or other services, they are very friendly there, the rooms are clean and nice, plus you can use the computers connected to the internet in the common room for free. The hostess informed us that on heavy usage the warm water sometimes goes out but we did not experience any shortage, I just can recommend it to you.

Not far away from the railway station you find the Celica Hostel at Njegoševa street from where you can grab a map of the city to find Alibi easier (:

The sun was out, the beer was cheap. The people were friendly and the food was on expenses!

Can’t wait to go back again for longer!

Is all you need to eat an ice-craem in the cafes, explore the castle, and start drinking beer at 10am as the Slovene folk do!

A very attractive peaceful capital – especially on a Sunday
