Scuba Diving  — 1 year ago

    Worth visiting!

I originally went for the beaches and the scuba diving, a relaxing and adventurous trip. I had the best time and was not disappointed. Now I am going back next month, not just for the best beaches, but to see the Mayan ruins. Intrigued! I’ll let you know how it goes.

How this place changed my life  — 1 year ago

    Worth visiting!

I lived in Merida (the capital) for a year on a scholarship from Rotary International. Not only did I get to meet great people and learn Spanish, I was able to travel all over the state and the peninsula. What a wonderful year of my life.

I went to the pyramids @ Chitzen itza and was amazed. It was around Easter or the Spring Equinox and they have this wild thing that happens. When the light hits it just right a shadow of a snake winds up the side of the pyramid. Wild. Something about spring & fertility. Then, something came over me; I just approached the pyrmaid and sprinted all the way to the top (never mind I could have fallen and died :-p ) . I, of course, was nearly hyperventilating when I reached the apex but it was some kind of spiritual challenge/cleansing I suppose. What a view!

I just read a National Geographic travel mag article about the cenotes of Yucatan. I am intrigued. The article mentions Dos Ojos, Bolonchohol, Dzitnup, & especially Aktun Chen. Does anyone have a favorite?

A tip I have about this place  — 1 year ago

    Worth visiting!

Make sure to travel around and really see it. Climb the pyramids…don’t just look from the ground. Take water and a video camera…not just a camera.

We were at Chicenitza during the Spring 2005 Equinox! 5000 + people were there and we saw Kulkukcan descend! It was incredible! Kulkukan in Maya means Feathered Serpent—also legend has it that it is associated with the Great White God leyendas of Quetzaquetal of the Aztec del Norte!
