A tip I have about this place  — 1 year ago

    Worth visiting!

Times change and I advise you to check this tip on http://www.alandstrafiken.ax/eng/index.htm

When we went, the inter-island ferries [NOT Viking or Silva] were free for pedestrians, cyclists [bikes too.] They were also free to motorists who were staying for a minimal number of nights on islands between the main island and the Finish mainland.

Mariehamn urban buses were also free but not the buses from Mariehamn around the island.

Let’s start with language; Åland is a province of Finland. In Finland there are two official languages, Finnish and Swedish – except in Åland, where there is only one; wait for it; SWEDISH!
In fact, if the Finnish Parliament passes any legislation that has any bearing on Åland, they must inform the Åland Assembly in Swedish.

Other than this, Åland has far more separation than normally applies to an autonomous province. When the post first-world-war League of Nations, a body with a reputation for not making binding decisions, made the decision, against the wishes of Ålanders, that Åland should belong to Finland rather than Sweden, they also made some important stipulations.

The most important was the decision that Åland should remain demilitarised and neutral. Hence, although Finland is a member of Nato and Finns generally are liable for a year’s military service, those born on Åland or legally accepted as Ålanders are exempt!

Furthermore 197land has its own flag, stamps and radio station. I am uploading a photo showing the flag of Åland occupying the centre position between those of Finland and Sweden.

While searching for the traffic site for my tip, I found http://www.aland.ax/alandinbrief/innehall.htm, which gives far more information on the above matters and others.

Why I want to go to this place  — 1 year ago

I hear the bicycling is excellent. Although I bet the summer time bicycling there is more popular, I am rather taken by the idea of ice biking there, too. See: http://icebike.com/Articles/IceroadToAland.htm

I was there with, in fact took the uploaded photo of my now wife Denise there! It’s one of the Swedish-speaking parts of Finland—in fact, it’s a group of islands closer to Sweden than to Finland!

I went to Aland by a Viking Line boat, when I was living in Stockholm. We’ve rent a little house, by the sea and had one of the most delicious weekends ever…

the people from Aland that came to Shetland for the Island Games were really nice, so its part of my task of wanting to visit all the islands that participated this year. I think Aland is the host in 2009 so I will hopefully go along then!

Take a bike and a sleeping bag and go ferry hopping in the summer… There’s a cottage on top of the largest hill where you can sleep overnight for free, with a georgeous 360 view of islands and ocean.
