LOVED IT!  — 2 months ago

    Worth visiting!

The people are wonderful, however, you should not expect a place that is lavish and setup for tourism. This is a very simple country with simple appeal and wonderful beauty when you search to find it!

Why I want to go to this place  — 1 year ago

I’ve met some Tajiks and they are some of the happiest people I’ve ever met. That whole region of the world interests me, but I would love to see my Tajik friends in their homeland.

    Worth visiting!

Climbed some new routes with a British guide who has guided Everest. Loved the mountains. Dushambe was interesting. I prefer the countryside though.

    Worth visiting!

Hard to manage, but well worth it – the scenery is spectacular and the people are the most hospitable in the world!

    Worth visiting!

I’ve been to Tajikistan once, on a holiday to Central Asian republics of the former Soviet Union.

How much more remote can you get?  — 2 years ago

    Not worth it!

While I like to think everywhere is worth visiting, some places are more so than others. This should not be on the top of your list unless you have pretty specific reasons (and surely, if you are reading this, you do) and are in the neighborhood. Badakshan area was pretty interesting, very barren, dry, poor. I really only saw Dushanbe (nice markets), Khorog, and passed through Khojand (if I recall). But I did drive to and from Samarkand to Dushanbe which was amazing scenery, with the mountains. Interesting Persian/Russian influences with some Moorish architecture in Dushanbe. Loved the plov, but greasy. I’d say go to Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan and then hit T-stan! I lived here for 5 months in 1996 working for a humanitarian organization and don’t need to return, although I had an amazing experience.
