I first visited Norway as part of a general tour round Europe. By the time I got to Norway I was getting pretty jaundiced by the fact that most places in Europe looked much the same as each other. Norway, however was a shock. This place is different, the houses, people, town centres, bars, restaurants, food and drink are all different to what you would find elsewhere. It is a very unique place and definitely worth a visit.
Oslo is a pretty miserable place and has little to commend it other than that it is the starting point for the Oslo to Bergen train. This journey takes you through the Norwegian tundra, across the fjords and finally into Norway’s prettiest town – Bergen. En route you get the chance to stop at Flomm – on top of a mountain, catch a train with 15 sets of brakes that will take you down the mountainside to Myrdal on the fjord and bring you back (it goes up the mountain faster than going down).
You may find Norwegian cuisine confusing – they dont do much with lunch or dinner. Breakfast is the big meal of the day and they do that in style. Get used to a few thousand calories before 9:00 am and then little else before bedtime.
Incidentally, since the sun is mow entering a newly active period, this will be a good time to travel further north to see the Aurora Borealis which will be particularly spectacular in the next few months.

We (young couple) went to Norway on the cheap. For 12 days. We flew in with Norwegian, the low cost airline which has recently (2010) extended its flight routes. We slept in the airport with sleeping mats+bags, very comfy! In the morning, we immediately headed to Jotunheimen with the 0930 bus and then the boat to Gjendebu. Straight to the heart of the parc. We hiked there for 7 nights, often in the rain and wind and cold, but with some sunny moments too. We only slept once in a hut (Ingjeby? next to Vettismorki) and 3 nights by Skogadalsboen, where you can use the lounge at not extra cost if you pay for your tent spot (70 NOK pp). The park was beautiful and we saw reindeers and drank water from rivers and ate delicious meals cooked on the gas stove (mashed potatoes, smoked sausage +peas/carrots, yummy!).
We then left the park, coz just too much rain and started hitchhiking. A local advised us Flam was pretty, so we went there. We couchsurfed 1 night there, then took the ferry to Naeroyfjorden (world heritage, absolutely stunning, and a sunny day! Lucky us!). We camped in a nice norwegian couple’s field, with a scenry that is on all the postcards. Now that is 5* camping! Morning showers in the petrol station.
With 2 days left to our return flight from Oslo, we started hitchiking to the capital. After 3 tiny lifts we got a ride all the way to Oslo.
Hjelle (exit of Jotunheimen)-Aardalstand with lady+her mother
Aardalstand-Flam with hippie female hiker, very friendly
Gudvangen-Flam with the spanish family
Flam-Aurland with the hydro engineer (visit of the church in Auralnd)
Aurland-Habakken with the weird rock climber
Habakken-Oslo with Paul+HElen, with a stop for waffles and coffee. Gorgeous landscape all the way and very nice people!
Our last lift advised us of a place to camp in Oslo (near the drinking water reservoir) and then we visited a few things in Oslo with a 24h transport pass: FRAM museum on Bygdoy Island, Viggeland park, royal park. Free guided tours at Akerfortress and Townhall (very worthwhile!).
Last night in a hotel (100 euros with cooking plates and a fridge – Cochs Pensjonat, next to the royal pak), the cheapest we found. It was raining hard.
I can sum up Norway in those 3 words. It’s totally worth a trip because in the 4 days I was there, I saw hundreds of kilometres of wild scenery, went on at least 5 ferry rides, saw 20-foot swords, saw “the ugliest town in Norway,” and did 2 punishing hikes with my cousins. One of those ended at Preikestolen, which I think may actually be the most beautiful place I’ve ever been to. You feel like you’re standing on the edge of the world.
“I’m working on an article about travelling to Norway in winter. I personally love Norway and I could write hundreds of pages about it. I’m having trouble squeezing all the good stuff into one article! What are the “essentials” of Norway?”

“should we squeeze in a quick day in kristiansand or spend more time in stavanger? we're planning on doing the triangle tour with two days in oslo, 1 1/2 days in bergen, and a day in stavanger before we head back to oslo.”

“I will be traveling in Scandinavia for about 11 days. We only have 4 days to spend in Norway. What area is a "must see." I'm very outdoorsy and would love to get in a hike or two through the fjords.”

“Does anyone know what the Norway In A Nutshell Tour is like. I've seen pictures of it and it looks nice but I'd rather get it from someone who's been on it.”
