I got in trouble with the head of the military police.....  — 3 months ago

Worth visiting!

Burkina Faso is definitely one of my most favorite places in the world. I went to Ouagadougou with friends. We rented motorcycles but ended up having problem after problem with them. Our first day riding involved sitting on the side of the road, near death experiences with a bus and a truck and bridge, sitting on a bench for hours holding little babies from a roadside village where they were trying to fix one bike, getting back to Ouaga, arguing with the bike renters with the help of a Liberian refugee, and landing ourselves mixed up in a bribery scam between the head of the military police and the bike renters.

We made it out and took a bus to Bobo where we boated out onto a lake with angry hippos, swam in a waterfall and saw towns that had been wiped out due to river blindness. One night we ended up at this huge party where they let me announce things even though I didn’t speak any of the local language or French. It was a blast.

It was intense and awesome and beautiful, a grand adventure.

Why I want to go to this place  — 1 year ago

Gosh! It’s in the middle of the darkest Africa. I would like to write my term paper about this country. That’s quite a challenge:)

If you go to sit on the crocodiles, make sure it’s got a chicken in its mouth first!

My friend Saoudata, Touareg activist is from Mali but lives in Burkina Faso. I want to visit her, see both countries and see how the blue people live.

Worth visiting!

but probably only as a place between Ghana and some other countries…

not a bad place though people can be annoying …

plus, Ougadougou is a cool name! A very French City with grand avenues and parks! (in a dusty country… strange)

Worth visiting!

I stayed in Ouagadougou for 2 weeks and it was the best time of my life…people are SO friendly…there are definitely some environmental and economic issues but the people and places make this an amazing place to stay.

Not worth it!

I only travelled through Burkina briefly, staying in Ouagadougou for a few days. I was on my way from Mali, where I was living, to Ghana for vacation. The landscape, language and food were much like Mali, but I must say I found Malians much nicer. In Ouagadougou I couldn’t walk ten feet down the road without having a “tourist leech” attach to me. No I don’t want a guide. No I don’t want a hotel. No I don’t want to go to your brother’s shop. And then, the vultures. Not a metaphor. Real vultures. EVERYWHERE. There are millions of them perched on every building and lamppost all over the city. I feel bad saying such negative things about a place I visited so briefly, but I would hesitate to go again. Nothing (except the tourist leeches) was awful, but nothing was really great, either.
