I Confess by twizt16

That the African continent is not within Madagascar. I did not, however, want to select the various countries and cities within Africa that I would like to visit, because my knowledge of them is very superficial. It comes predominantly from books and a very few personal accounts of friends or family or complete strangers. I figure it isn’t really fair to select places until I get there and start poking around and realizing that the places that strike my interest and my fancy are the ones I hear about while I’m there and not necessarily the ones I’ve heard about elsewhere. The only reason I am creating this category within the Madagascar is because I would like to go to Madagascar at some point.

And Mauritious. And the Mayotte Islands. And Kenya. And Egypt. And Ghana. And Senegal. And South Africa. Etc. But I digress!

It would be much simpler if you were allowed to select a continent to visit here insted of only countries and cities and smaller units.

In any case, I have been fascinated with Africa’s cultural development and historical anthropology since I was about eight years old. I have written kazillions of reports on various countries, cultural trends, subcultures, news articles, books relative to the location, etc. And ever since my first books-about-Africa-only library binge, I have been enamored of the continent. Everything about it just sparks my imagination.

Recently I have been looking at post-university volunteer opportunities. I have considered several organizations, independent and government alike, and have been researching the variety of choices out there. I know that what I’m talking about doing is years away but it never hurts to give it ample consideration in advance! And it is a nice dream, going to where I have always wanted to go and helping people in fashion I have always wanted to help. Although, obviously, I would need to take Donald and our future into account as well. I will pick my future with him and volunteering at home and visiting Africa over the other one, unless he wanted to come along as well lol.

I can feel the train of thought leaving the tracks. In any case, the point is that I have been considering the opportunities and there is a fabulous one in Ghana. Six months, approximately $1600 plus travel expenses, all living expenses paid, teaching kids there English and French. Sounds perfect to me =) It would really be outside of my cultural box, so hopefully I’d go into it with an open mind, if I did it. As this is all hypothetical. And obviously Ghana isn’t every place in Africa, but it is a start, and I would have a break with which to travel to other places such as Kenya and Madagascar and Egypt and the like.

So I’m just turning the idea over in my head…=)
