Worth visiting!

Pavlovsk’s main attraction is the State Reserve Pavlovsk Palace and Park.

The palace was one of the very few “imperial” homes that was built on a human scale. It has one of the largest parks in Europe, that is definitely worth seeing since it does have a variety of landscapes—largely in the English style—forests and various pavilions (the Rose Pavilion was reconstructed in the mid-1990’s and has some of the best floral painted decoration).

The palace (including the Rose Pavilion) were burned by the retreating army towards the end of WW2 (The Great Patriotic War). Pavlovsk Palace was the first of the destroyed palaces to be reconstructed, and where various techniques were tested.

The landscaped setting for the Neo-classical Palace, is varied with river valley, hillocks, forests, and so forth—and is, to my sensibilities, the best of the parks in the region, if not in Russia.

The Palace is quite a majestic jewel box of interior design, painted decoration, impressive interior space, furnishings, objects d’art, elaborate parquet floors, et al. It is amazing that the palace was so terribly destroyed, and, phoenix-like, reconstructed.
