Sense of history  — 9 months ago

Worth visiting!

I did my training in Canterbury, and for three years walked past this building everyday. At that time it was possible to come and go through the cathedral gate without having to pay. I also had my graduation ceremony in the cathedral, one of my best memories.
Walking around the inside it’s possible to see the tombs of various people from history including the Black prince, as well as the spot where Thomas Beckett was murdered.
It’s one of my favourite places in the world.

What an impressive cathedral  — 1 year ago

Not worth it!

Canterbury Catherdral is more than impressive and photos do not do it justice. It is simply vast. My biggest tip is don’t be super cheap and buy the guide book. No, your entrance fee does not get you all of the information about things. So, cough up the money so you can know what you are seeing. Then, take your time and absorb some history.

A tip I have about this place  — 1 year ago

Worth visiting!

If you should have the pleasure of visiting Canterbury Cathedral, be sure to stay for Evensong. The service begins, if memory serves, at about 5:30 daily. Your heart will sing for days after that experience!

Worth visiting!

I actually studied abroad in Canterbury, England for a semester. I walked passed this cathedral every day. It is absolutely beautiful. It’s impossible to get lost in the city. Just look around and walk towards the cathedral. You’ll make your way back to High Street in no time.

was for a graduation ceremony, was so chuffed with myself for finally struggling through the course I had my head high after getting my cert and nearly marched right out the back of the cathedral. Non Uni of Kent people will still find this one of the tip top cathedrals in the UK. I particularly like the skinny sad jesus on the gate as you go in, and the gothic colonades.

This is an awesome place… the centre of the Anglican Communion and World Heritage listed for a good reason.

Worth visiting!

The cathedral is amazing.

I had a very strange epiphany here. After visiting the cathedral, I walked to the town square to find a store that sold some sort of caffinated beverage. As I approached the center of the town square, there it was… Starbucks. There is something really odd about enjoying my favorite beverage, and seeing one of the oldest cathedrals in England. It sounds lame, but for some reason, this is one of my most fond memories of my travels through the UK.

The Mother Church of the Church of England, Canterbury Cathedral was built in 602 for the coming of the first archbishop from Rome, Saint Augustine. The Cathedral is most famous for the shrine of the Christian martyr, Thomas a Becket, which attracts thousands of pilgrims each year. Unfortunately, Becket’s shrine was destroyed by Henry VIII in the 16th century, but miraculously the beautiful stained glass windows survived.

The Mother Church of the Anglican World!  — 3 years ago

The present Canterbury Cathedral, greatly rebuilt in 1174 after fires destroyed earlier structures, was once England’s – and northern Europe’s – most sacred pilgrimage site.
