American Visionary Arts Museum

The American Visionary Arts Museum is shockingly good. The draw is that everything here was created by untrained artists, many of whom were considered during their lives to have nothing valuable to contribute to society. And some of the artists weren’t even human. It will challenge your assumptions about art and perception.

And it’s got the best gift shop on Earth.

My favorite museum, period.

Was here on the 14th with a group from school. It was mostly art history students, and then us four graphic designers. We ditched the art history group (they were going to The Walters & the BMA) and struck out on our own. We spent the day exploring the museum – absolutely incredible. I don’t think I’ve ever had as much fun at a museum before!!

If your into art, you will absolutly LOVE this museum! A lot of the art here is from untrained artists, and their visions are SO clear and able to read. Well worth the fee in the door. You won’t regret it.

The glass mural on the front of the building is incredible! Even if you don’t go inside be sure to stop and check this out. It’s swirling patterns of cobalt glass/bottles and mirror, with a Van Gogh-ish feel to it.

This museum is the coolest! Art by outsider artists galore. They basically have one large themed show per year (and several smaller shows) so I recommend you try to go at least once a year. This is a “don’t miss” attraction when you’re in Baltimore. It’s located right on the Inner Harbor and easily accessible. 3 stories including a cafe. There’s also a really good Cuban bar within walking distance. They also have a kinetic sculpture race once a year with sculptures designed to float on the water (past floats have included a giant pink poodle!). Their museum shop is great as well (with lots of kitschy stuff similar to that at La Luz de Jesus Gallery in L.A.).

If humans who haven’t any art supplies beyond unraveled
sock yarn and mud can create unforgettable art full of
beauty and personality, why don’t I?

All the works here are done by artists who are described as self-taught or visionary or naive. My mom would call them crazy people.

They change the exhibits pretty often, so even if you’ve been before, it’s always worth a return trip. The gift shop has a mix of local crafts and Archie McPhee-type items. I’ve never tried the cafe.

AVAM is mesmerizing. It also has one of the best museum stores on earth. So much fun!
