A review of this place: Just beatiful!  — 2 months ago

    Worth visiting!

I wouldn’t mind moving to Cairns if my man is not over it!

I’ve been to Cairns twice to visit my boyfriend, who was working on a project in Cairns. The first time was for Australia Day long weekend and we went to Kuranda, the highlands and the remote places like Windy Farms and such (I forgot details). It was amazing.

I went there again for the second time because my boyfriend was feeling crap, and I’m there to give him a taste of home (read: to play wife). This time I just sat at home cos he is out to work but the serenity of the place and the natural beauty gave me so much peace.

Besides, Cairns at this time is waaaay warmer than Brisbane!

A tip I have about this place  — 4 months ago

    Not worth it!

I have lived in Cairns for the last 21 years of my life (the only 21 years of my life) and unless you are into the beach, being tanned, and drinking it is a shit place to be. If you are different you are ostricised, looked down upon and cast aside. It is incredibly hard to make friends with people unless you drive a ute, play football and a re racist. I can’t stand living in this place. The only thing it is good for is the beach, which I hate.

A good place to access Northern Queensland. North to Port Douglas. South to Townsville and Airlie Beach. Daintree Rainforest not far away.

The Great Barrier Reef  — 1 year ago

I swim like a rock, but this didn’t stop me from diving in the barrier reef. With Suba gear, a guild and no common sense away I went for a trip of a life time. The one thing that gets you is the lack of sound. I never ‘heard’ the Barracuda swim up behind me, I only saw it when i turned around and saw it starring at me. HELLO! What a great time I had, fun, sun, and wonderful friendly people who speak english!

A Great Place to Live  — 1 year ago

    Worth visiting!

I am currantly living and teaching English in Japan for just over a year now and i am originally from London,uk but before coming to Japan I lived in Australia for 5 years and I was based up in the tropics in Cairns. I fell in love with Cairns at first sight and the longer I lived there the better it became. Sure, like most places Cairns has a few problems but anyone who is travelling and staying for a few days and leaves with a bad impression should really stay longer and get to know the locals and the history and culture of Cairns. The more you dig the more you will like.

Of course you can`t possibly go to Cairns and not be affected by the nature and the sheer beauty of the surroundings. You have the Great Barrier Reef on your doorstep, a free swimming and BBQ area at the lagoon, moutnains and rainforests surrounding the city. But the best thing about Cairns is that it is not so big and the people you meet there are all warm and open and laid back. There are many international students and being a teacher there is great.

There are many backpackers and tourists and I guess staying in a Backpackers is cheap but I would suggest staying longer in a share house and really letting the city overpower you.

When I am done with Japan I will not go back to the UK…I will head for the beautiful tropics of Australia:)

You cannot get to Cairns and not see these things. Cairns is an OK city, but it’s the location that makes it so special. The daintree is an hour away, get there.

The hostels in Cairns are pretty cheap and plentiful.. beautiful girls at the lagoon.. It’s a bit touristy but still fun.
