If you go down the street where the gate is, you’ll only see the tourist side of Chinatown. If you go over one street, you can hit the real Chinatown. The guy in this picture was the tallest person by far on the whole street! It’s fun to browse the Chinese markets with all the dried fish and herbs.

If you go to San Francisco, you have to go to Chinatown. It’s that simple. It’s the best Chinatown in the US. I highly suggest eating there as well.

Chinatown, along with the Sea Lions by the pier, are the two must sees in SF, in my opinion. This place is fun to walk around. Get on the side streets, too, not just on Grant. We had dim sum at this place New Asia or All Asia or something like that. We were the 2 people in there who were not Chinese. The food was really good.

When I was on the verge of homelessness, a friend of mine who rented a small room in a residential hotel in Chinatown told me that there was a room vacant. So I was accepted as a tenant there, and I even ended up living in the room right across from where my friend lived.
It was the only place I could afford to live at while attending SFSU to complete my BA in English Lit. It was great while I was there, and I left to get married to someone I met onine. (That was a big red flag, BTW, but I was in love with love so I hardly cared.) Even so, I was able to enjoy the local cuisine, especially dim sum. You have not been to Chinatown without experiencing a real dim sum meal.
Were it not for the cheap lodging in Chinatown, I probably never would have been able to finish my degree, so in that way my life did change for the better. It is certainly the best place on the West Coast to enjoy the Chinese New Year celebration. I even bought a “Year of the Tiger” T-shirt, since I was born in a Tiger year. My best experiences (including my college graduation) happened during Tiger years.

Not worth it!
It’s a touristy place, mostly, except for the areas close to where people live. I went there with a group of Korean and Chinese students during work and they were SO not impressed, but it’s a cute area. Lots of good food and trinkets to take home.

My husband and I have accidentally found a “chinatown” everywhere we go -so now it’s now become kinda become our mission, if we go to a new town, we can’t leave until we find Chinatown.
