Why I recommend this place to visitors  — 8 months ago

Worth visiting!

It’s a beautiful town, and tourists are quite fond of the scenery and the feel of it. Nothing like the lower 48. I wouldn’t recommend living here unless you were heavily into hippie/outdoorsy activities. There’s not much in the way of concerts, shopping, or even the bar scene. But there’s lots of artsy people, mostly liberals, a lot of outdoorsy things going on all over the place.

Worth visiting!

twice, briefly.
The first time, I moved there with my boyfriend who had family there. I arranged flowers by day and did theater at the Perserverance at night, in Douglas.
The second time, I stowed away on a ferry with about $40 in my pocket, and ended up spending the summer, working at the Heritage coffee shop.
Juneau is a special place. The people are unaffected by a lot of the culture of the lower 48; very authentic, very thoughful and real. It is among the most beautiful places I have ever been in my life, if not in the number 1 spot. Juneau is a truly magical place. I hope I make it back some day.

I Woke Up One Morning  — 1 year ago

Worth visiting!

One morning on the cruise ship I woke up, looked out my window, and there was Juneau.

The area is beautiful. Juneau sits on a small harbor, surrounded by tall mountains which are densely wooded. High above the city are numerous waterfalls which come off of the snowpack up above and cascade down the steep mountainsides. From the distance they look rather small, but using a pair of binocualrs you can see that these are raging torrents that come down the mountainside.

There is plenty to do in Juneau. We ascended the Mount Roberts Tramway and went whale watching out of Auke’s Bay. Both were wonderful experiences. We also wandered around and explored the city.

Juneau reminded me somewhat of Park City, UT or Jackson Hole, WY, where the center of the city caters to tourists with old fashioned buildings, lots of gift and souvenir shops, numerous shops that sell works produced by local artists, restaurants, and a handful of saloons.

I would have enjoyed a longer stay in Juneau to have had enough time to visit the Mendenhall Glacier and to explore more of the city as well.

This is my favorite place in Alaska. Its is such a cute town and there are no rodes into Juneau which adds to its charm. We were there in the summer so there were many flowers blooming and the sun was shining. Absolutly georgious !

Worth visiting!

My favorite town in Alaska (that I visited). Aside from being beautiful (like most of the state), there’s something oh-so-appealing about a town that one cannot reach by road.

Less of a city than Anchorage, less of a party town than Ketchikan…but I think that’s part of the beauty of it. Standing in Juneau, looking up at the waterfalls above the city, I can see why so many “misfit toys” run away to Alaska…I was almost one of them myself.

Juneau is such a beautiful little town! Mountains and water make for some fantanstic sunsets, whalewatching and fishing are awesome here! Summers are the best, with the sun out til the wee hours of the morning. I love Juneau…

A tip I have about this place  — 1 year ago

Worth visiting!

Make sure to get out of the few square blocks of downtown. Venture out to any one of the hundreds of hiking trails, several glaciers, lakes, rivers, or beaches. You’ll see bald eagles, bears, mountain goats, ravens, spawning salmon, old growth forest, wildflowers, maybe even some gold! If you like this kind of stuff you’ll never tire of the place. Downtown isn’t the most quaint in AK, but it serves it’s purpose, and does have some really fun bars with amazing musicians playing live almost every night. Also, it’s very liveable. Plenty of jobs and a relatively decent amount of things to do indoors in addition to the vast array of outdoorsy stuff.

i live here, and the beauty of this place is still amazing. there aren’t many places like this in the world. it is so completely wild here. if you go by juneau, visit pier 9 on the cruise ship docks (best water view * easily accesible) and go to the glacier.
