The canal  — 1 month ago

When I was there in February 2005, the canal was frozen and I had just 5 days to stay at Baltica hotel.

I Loved St-Peterburg as it recalled me atmosphere of cities like Barcelona or Prague, but in a more charming style.

The architecture is so beautiful, sometimes it’s surreal. You’d think you were looking at a model and not a real building. Want to go back when it’s June to experience not being able to sleep because it’s light out at 2 o’clock in the morning.

How this place changed my life  — 11 months ago

saint Petersburg, Russia! I have been there so many times i lost count. I first went there in 1994 with a group of physicians, for study at the I.P Pavlov Medical Institute…while I was there i fell in love, and 7 years I was engaged to be married to Julia, who was born and raised there. She works in Administration at the hospital there. St. Petersburg is a very unique, beautiful city, rich with history. The Romanov family was there, long ago… Peter the Great had his palace on the Neva…(it is now The Hermitage, a fantastic art museum, second only, in my humble opinion, to the Louvre!), Catherine had her beautiful blue palaces there too….it is the city where Czar Nicholas Romanov, Alexandra and family were shot to death, after the Bolshivik Revolution. Now at the site of their deaths, is a beautiful cathedral with exceptional mosiacs on the exterior, called the “Chaple on Spilled Blood” or something close to that… The Neva is big and beautiful, and it is an experience never to forget, White Nights in St. Petersburg, the bridges over the Neva are raised, wonderful festivals, music, dancing…. The people of St. Petersburg are mostly very kind and friendly (for Russians) and although much of the city reflects the ruins of communism, there is so much to see and do, a great experience…I would have loved it there even without Julia.. As for Julia, it’s a long story, things never worked out for her to leave Russia because she could not take Alexandra, her daughter, away… Again, long story, but forgetting matters of the heart, St. Petersburg should be on anyone’s list if they love to travel to places rich in culture, tradition, art, history. Just be prepared to eat cucumbers, and dont drink the local Vodka!

    Ciao!

It is one of my favorite places I’ve had the chance to visit in my travelling experience. The Winter Palace is amazing. Absolutely gorgeous and unique. Loved it.

Why I recommend this place to visitors  — 11 months ago

I think that Saint_Petersbourg is the most beautiful city in Russia. I’ve been there once and it was a really good experience!
It was built to be the capital of Russia so there are a lot of tourist attractions and sightseeings. You find a lot of sights like the Hermitage Musuem, the palaces of Tsar family and aristocracy, churches… The most extravagant one is surely Saint Isaac island because of its size.
    You really should go there!

A review of this place: The city of my birth  — 1 year ago

The good: the old bits are beautiful. The Hermitage, the parks, the suburbs. In the summer, daylight goes on forever. Stockholm is right across the sea.
The bad: the crime, the smells, the poverty.
    The ugly: see above.
I spent the first thirteen years of my life there. I do not want to go back. But if you’ve never been, you should give it a try…if you dare.
