Pompeii

An absolutely amazing place. Eerie, fascinating and awesome. Keep a look out for grooves made in the road paving stones by carts (especially around corners) and plaster casts of people who perished in the eruption (seriously creepy but fascinating at the same time). Look closely at the models for details like sandal straps.

Go in the off season if possible. We went in January, and it was 20 degrees (Celsius), sunny and gorgeous. You won’t find the crowds there as you will in summer. And I have heard that the sun radiating off all that stone can make your trip there hellish.

We stayed in Naples and travelled there by train for the day. I would stay in Sorrento next time. Take a spare camera battery, because I had used up my first one in a matter of hours.

An impressively large site – well, it is a city! Wear a good pair of walking shoes, you’ll need them! I remember sitting in the amphitheatre and looking out at the surrounding countryside.

Definately worth going to see. Really amazing. Wear comfy shoes it’s really rocky.

i was on a cruise so i saw pompeii and naples and sorrento all in one day. i think a few hours were enough for pompeii, for me (someone with an average appreciation of history). if you’re really big into history i would recommend spending a day here. its very possible as its huge!

The sheer size of this place was mind blowing.

I can’t recommend highly enough visiting Pompeii – and Napoli, of course. Just amazing.

I am going to be in Rome in April, should I make Pompeii a day trip or is it worth the overnight stay? If so, whats a good place to stay while there?

The guides were wonderful. It is truly an amazing place and if you like history or archeology, you will really enjoy it. It took several hours to tour and I could have spend more.

Even though Pompeii is awesome, I would recommend visiting Ercolano/Herculaneum even more than Pomepeii !
Because it was closer to Vesuvius, it is much better preserved !

Very cool place, wish I would have had a guide but did ok on my own.

I imagine this place to be a beatuiful jewel of frozen history. I was captivated by the erie pictures of the frozen people unearthed from ashes of vesuvius as a child and am very excited to be traveling there this fall.
