My boyfriend and I had been fighting with each other across Europe. We came down through Yugoslavia on a train to Athens. A boat took us to Crete in the late summer. We found a white washed room in a little in on the beach. Everyday we ate french bread and chocolate, drank red wine and swam in the sea. When my body emerged from the sea, the sun would dry me so quickly that sand crystals were left shimmering on my body like diamonds. I spent glorious mornings alone, running along the shore in the rising sun. Evenings were romantic. Our life was simple. I left him there. I flew home to the USA via Turkey, and he found his way to Israel and Egypt. We later met in Egypt but that’s a whole different story.

Why I want to go to this place  — 7 months ago

i studied greek art in the bronze age in college and came very close to pursuing a masters degree in art education with an emphasis on this period of history. i have heard it is touristy but i don’t care. does anyone have any idea how the weather would be in july as i am coming up on a milestone bday celebration and have considered this place. good thing i did not pursue that degree… i have already proven my others fairly useless….

I went to crete last year and it was probably the best holiday i have EVER been on! there is sooo much do to, so many bars and restuarants and it is just a beautiful place! we stayed in Stalis which is the less 18 – 30 town next to Malia and the beach was so nice. We went on a few trips but if i had to reccomend one id say the jeep safari, its not cheep at around £40pp but it is definately worth it!

when crossing a road dont get run over… might sound stupid but seriously the drivers dont care if your crossing, theyll run you over lol

oh and another tip is to not run into palm trees like my brother did because he ending up going to hospital and nearly died in the ambulance because like i said… the drivers aint that good. my brother ended up spending a day in hospital and he still has abit of the palm tree spike thing in his arm

but it is worth going to see for all the historical stuff if your into that, even if your not, its still all amzing and you’ll have fun.

My favorite of all Greece I visited. I would say stay away from the big cities like Chania and Irakleon and get out into the country. My favorites were Sivas/Matala and Falasarna just west of Kissamos. Watch the sunset at Falasarna from a little taverna on the road back into town. Its called Spilios or something similar meaning cave. The owner was the friendliest guy from the whole trip. We got to try his father’s homemade equivalent of Sherry. The family makes their own wine and Raki. A must visit!
