Sainte-Chapelle

quite possibly the single best moments spent in paris.

Built in the mid-13th century by Saint Louis, king of France, as a reliquary for Christ’s crown of thorns and other relics of the Passion. The stained glass is breath-taking. You will want to go twice: Once by day to see sunlight streaming through the windows, then again by night for one of the concerts. At the time of our 1997 visit, there was a rotation of music ensembles, offering in turn Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik and Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, among other things. Since Sainte-Chapelle is located within the grounds of the Palais de Justice, the schedule of musical performances is posted at a kiosk outside the complex. We chose a program of 12th and 13th century vocal and instrumental music performed on period instruments (and with period voices?) by Ensemble Alégria. What a magical evening that was!

The might in this catherdral is the best in paris. The sound of the organ, too, is superb. Go just before sunset, catch the light coming through the windows, and realize what causes faith.

Tends to get upstaged by its big brother just around the corner, but to my mind this boasts the most beautiful church interior I’ve ever seen…

When I was in high school my choral group went on tour in Europe. We had the opportunity to give a concert in this totally amazing place!!! To this day it remains one of my most favorite places in the world! I’ve been back a few times since.

If you get a chance to catch a concert here DO! The sound is beautiful…I haven’t heard anything half as good as far as accustics go.

Another must-see place in Paris…....in Sainte Chapelle, the story of the bible is told in stained glass pictures. Amazing to see. The place has an incredible feel – I’ve many times & each time I find myself just sitting and staring at the window scenes for ages…

like standing in a kalaidescope.

I was forced to go in, and then didn’t want to leave…Really spectacular!

Went here with my foundation Art and Design course. ....mid-winter…..freezing cold with about 9 layers on and desperately trying to sketch despite my numb fingers.

Beautiful downstairs – amazing brightly coloured carved pillars and walls.
But even more beautiful upstairs….just a huge room with one wall taken over by a stained glass window. Get there on a brigt day and the whole room lights up!
