Exit Glacier

See how far the ice has retreated from the lake.

i’d never imagined i’d love a big piece of ice.. although it is melting i did collect a rock from there as a memory

like portage, this glacier has receded tremendously in the past few years! it is no where near as big as it was when i was a kid, but is a much better glacier to visit than portage in my opinion. if you like exit glacier, visit the matanuska glacier! that is the best, easily accessable glacier in alaska.

Watch for bears!

It is an easy hike to the bottom, a wee tiny bit of a challenge to make your way to the top – and an amazing view of the Harding Ice Fields. Flying over it takes your breath away. Nothing like a glacier you can walk up to and pet.

...if not for the risk of a ton of ice breaking off and crushing you. It’s over land though, not over a big bay or anything, unlike most of the glaciers you see in Alaska.

If you’re already in Seward, it’s worth a little jaunt to go see. Don’t go too far to get there though. The drive there is nice, pretty from a distance.
