As others have said, go when it’s wicked dark if at all possible! It will make your experience significantly better.

A tip I have about this place

Go when it is close to new moon. We could see a bit of the bioluminescense, but it could have been better.

And do the kayaks! So much cooler (and better for the environment) than the stinky, loud boats.

The first time I went to this place

The water is so much like what’s seen in Disney movies.

It’s…. strange.

Most traumatizing expierience of my life

i was about 9 when my family took here. Seeing the water glowing, THE HUGE FISH SURROUNDING THE BOAT GLOWING, too much for me.

The first time I went to this place

As wonderful as it is to look into the water, don’t forget to look up. There is very little light pollution (to make sure we can see thebioluminescence) – so the night sky is gorgeous. It’s a wonderful place for star-gazing.

Why I recommend this place to visitors

It’s been a few years, but I have been to Vieques twice. Twice also to bio bay. It’s something you absoluely have to see before it’s destroyed. Any change with nature or man made changes can endanger this spectacle of nature. If you want to photo the glow-in-the-dark organisms, you must bring a professional grade extremely high speed film. Regular cameras will not capture the image. You must swim. I must go back

Kayaking

Oh my goodness this was such an awesome experience. Kayaking to the bay was easy considering it was upstream and once we go there it was so sweet to see the plankton light up and we got to swim around in it. But on the way back it was upstream and i was sooo tired. It was definately one of the hardest things i have ever has to do!!
