Kailua, O'ahu

Was there in May 2009 by JWillow

Wish I’d found it sooner – such a beautiful place and such friendly people. I got the local bus from Waikiki for just $2USD, spent the day on the most beautiful white, sandy beach & swam in crystal clear waters. Would really love to go back some day and spend more time there.

This town is where I live on the Island with my boyfriend. Waikiki is nice and all but the windard side of the island is much more iconic and that is where Kailua is as well. Beaches off the beaten path are a must see.

Well, I officially want to move here now. This town, and water puts me at peace.

How will I get there to stay??? That is the big question.

It’s laidback, peaceful, spiritual, paradise. Everything I want to be.

Our Last Day by joie16

We found our way to Kailua on our last day in Oahu. The waters were calmer than North Shore ;) and the sand was really fine. This seems to be the spot for kayakers. We’ll definitely go back and make a stop at the local zippy’s for portuguese sausage, eggs and fried rice. YUMMY!

Natural Beauty by calebjay

Beautiful…simple…luxurious. Those are the 3 words that come to mind when I think of Kailua. Staring at the people and surroundings here is like looking directly at a Ralph Lauren advertisement. The architecture, gardening, and shops represent a beach grandeur like no other. Kailua is the quintessential prototype of what a beach town ought to be like. Filled with boutique clothing and shoe stores, a plethora of sand filled low-high restaraunts, this Oahua East Coast windward destination is a must for any local or tourist. Even if you forget that its two beaches, Kailua and Lanikai Beach, are ranked among the top in the nation, the small town big attitude lifestyle is worth it. The only downside…prices. This is an upscale town with the average 3/2 house running at 850,000.

This was the best move of my life so far by omgparticle

Being that I only lived one other place I suppose thats not saying much, but being that I’ve traveled around a bit it is saying a little.

People/Culture – open, friendly, diverse.

Things to do

- Lani Kai/Kailua beach (swim, canoe, snorkle, kite board, wind surf, catamaran, surf(long board, although castles will rarely have big enough waves for short boarding.)

-The pill box hike (named such becuase of the old wwII boxes on the ridge you hike up) – Once you get to the top you can see from Sandy/Makapua Light house all the way up past china man’s hat. Some people have a jump point to paraglide from up there.

You’ll find it by the golf course in Lani Kai, park by the condo’s front gate, a little path goes up the side of a chain link fence.

-The food, some of the better places I think are Buzz’s (the only one by the water, steak/seafood), Lucy’s, Champa Thai, the Japanese place between Boardriders and an Italain place, Bacci Bistro(across from lucys),
