Oh, and by the way, the Frommer’s article to the right describes Jacksonville, FL, NOT JACKSONVILLE, NC. J-ville, NC is in Onslow county, not Duval. Don’t go looking for any entertainment complexes here! For you military types, I pray for the day you either EAS or get to PCS from this place. I think they make J-ville crummy on purpose so that when someone returns from deployment they can say: “Wow, this is what I was missing?” Yeah, exactly, you haven’t missed anything!

Oh, this is in response to to a post from someone else’s post on here:

Jacksonville, NC is a great place to come if you want: 1) a high and stupid crummy haircut, 2) a couple tattoos as there are about 75 parlors here 3) a lap dance, 4) some type of piercing, 5) a prostitute, 6) to find some who will proposition you (who has a short haircut coincidentaly) 7) a DUI, 8) Rims or tires for your ride 9) a sound sytem for your ride. {color:red} And lastly, J-ville is a great place to come and get a STD! Cheers!

Stay away!!!!!!!!!! Yes, I am in the military, and yes I have a college education and consider myself a person of reason. The absolute worst town in the United States! I rank it right up there with Lake Charles, LA, and Rock Springs, WY. An absolute dump. Very depressing place with nothing to do at all. Wilmington, NC: complete opposite! Real people, tons of restaurants, etc. GO THERE!!!!!!!!! I hate this town with a passion AS I WAS STATIONED HERE FOR 5 YEARS!!!! I don’t care to here reviews from NJ retirees who drove through the town for 30 minutes and found it “quaint.” It is a run-down, crime-ridden place with nothing. I think the town that they thought was actually “quaint” was New Bern. New Bern has an actual waterfornt, restaurants, and is very nice! Go to New Bern!!! I would cuss as I drove through this town going places. I actually lived in Sneads Ferry, NC, a tiny town to the south. I would do anything to avoid J-ville. I wouldn’t go to this place if I were running out of oxygen and J-ville was the only place that had it!! I would rather just die!!!!!!!!!! This town has done NOTHING to improve itself in the last 40 or so years. There is a glimmer of hope with businesses on the Western Extension. Other than that, it stinks. I could go on and on. If you aren’t in the military and don’t have a shaved haircut and find yourself in J-ville, then you made a horrible mistake!!!!!! Get out of this trap immediately! I can think of about a thousand other places I would rather be that this place: Wilmington, Southport, Raleigh, Topsail Beach, New Bern, OBX, etc. People go to J-ville because THEY ARE STATIONED HERE AND HAVE NO CHOICE!!! Normal people don’t come here!!!! If you really want a goood tour of J-ville, just go to google maps and pan in on the street view function. Look at the area from just south of downtown on Hwy 24 from the Camp Johnson gate to the Camp LeJeune main gate. Nothing but strip clubs, used car lots, barber shops, and tattoo places. Just keep going to Morehead City, Emerald Isle, or Swansboro!!!

If your old and don’t want to retire in Tampa this is a great place for you to crash. If your young (say, 18 like I am) then this isn’t exactlly the greatest.. Especially if your moving from NYC or VA…

whose husband is a Marine, currently stationed in Iraq. We had so much fun the whole weekend, but I do believe the highlight of the visit was Saturday night. She and I had planned a night on the town with perhaps some dancing and pool. Instead we ended up starting the evening at a great tattoo and piercing studio (Altered Image) where we both got our bellybuttons pierced. It was definitely unplanned but the memories will make me smile and giggle for quite some time.

thats all. its a shit-town, but it had my beloved eldredges so there ya go.

I love this place I lived here for about 4 months and i fell in love with jacksonville! OK so the 50,000+ marines stationed here had a little to do with this but i really love that JAX has all 4 seasons and also it was my 1st time out on my own but i was so happy here. i live in south texas and we only have 2 kinds of weather hot and hotter! i am going to move back here in 9months and counting anyone know of any nice family places to live

Ok so my brother is a US Marine stationed here and while he and many other people (military) say this is not a fun place to visit ….its no fleet week, like NYC but its very pretty. The greatest advice that I can give anyone heading toward the beaches of NC … is go THE SPEED LIMIT~ The cops are a$$holes and will get you!! Other than that ladies if you are looking to get hitched ASAP … this seems to be the place to locate your spouse!! Its 10 guys to a girl … definitely different than DC & NYC ratio… and thats being conservative. Ok I think I’ve said enough!

We lived here for 4 years, my husband is a U.S. Marine. We lived in town and in base housing. Definitely not the coolest of places, BUT it has been the nicest the Marines has sent us to so far. I wouldn’t choose to live there….
