Not worth visiting!

ramshackle shanty town

The premise is good – a city founded on providing for each other and not always working ‘for the man’, but I was disappointed. We were greeted by an old man in front of this mural and he was very friendly. He saw me taking this photo and went on and on about how to get to the actual village.

There is some great graffiti art, but outside of that it seems like squatterville. There are tons of little shacks that aren’t maintained. The area is often referred to as a hippie village – I didn’t get that feeling at all. There was no care for the environment and it was littered with trash. If you’re looking for something unique or to say you’ve been there then go, but it reminded me of a piece of art work that needed explaining.

I’m a secret hippie. I really enjoyed my walk through Christiania. Christiania is a hippie commune literally inside Copenhagen. An interesting social experiment, but apparently it’s now a very exclusive place to live. It’s a little off putting to walk into a cafe & have a dozen or so old hippies & bikers turn around and stare at you, but it’s all good. You will be offered drugs on Pusher Street, I would proceed with caution as you never know what you’re going to get on the street. Fantastic street art & some very interesting houses. If you are lucky to find yourself in Copenhagen, totally make a trip out to Christiania.

i love this place!

reminds me of what life might have been like before consumer culture and cars, too bad it might disappear as the land value goes up and the right wing party wins..

Worth it, but don't bother paying

...for the tour. Just wander round on your own. Some of the DIY houses had a definite slant, I don’t know if that was a statement of individuality or just an example of building under the influence :p Apparently Pusher Street is gone too, so there goes the main reason for visiting (for most people)! There was also a little cafe that made the best vegetable soup I’ve ever had…I’d revisit just for that, but the second time it’s never as nice as your memory tells you… Also, I have to say that as a rampant anti-hippie I wish they would just rebuild it as a nice park with some tasteful housing :)

forget the 'drugs' - look a little deeper..

...and you’ll see an amazing, self sufficient community and some excellent architecture using natural materials…best bet is to ride a bike around the lake are to see cool houses with grass roofs and some ingenious and beautiful design solutions.

The Free Town of Christiania, Copenhagen, Denmark

Inside the capitol of Copenhagen, you find The Free Town Of Christiania. Christiania started in the 70’s on unused military ground. The state of Denmark agreed to let Christiania exist as a social experiment. Read much more about Christiania on the website http://www.christiania.org

Christiania is used to a lot of tourists, both danish and foreign visitors. Even tho’ Christiania is an area without a local policestation, it don’t lack of the presence of the authorities.

Christiania is a very nice place to visit and a lot of nice people. The dining places and cafés are great and you will find fine live music several places in the area.
