Take the tour of the night time sky… in English and learn about the Southern skies—do not miss this!!
Take the Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon) tour at sunset—there is a volcano in the distance which is where Bolivia, Argentina & Chile meet!
Take the geyser tour before sunrise (freezing cold, but an experience—especially if you take a dip in the hot baths!)
YOU MUST GO SANDBOARDING!!!!!
You can get these tours by just walking around San Pedro and stopping into booths. A few were offered thru our hostel (3 tiered bunkbeds with a thatched roof!)

It’s a nice spot to explore the desert area. Just keep in mind that you are at high altitude and bring lots of water. I couldn’t believe the dramatic change of temperature. It was so cold in the morning that I had to wear long-sleeve jacket. But after 1 p.m., it was boiling hot.

Definetly: go there!
Go see the salt plans of Atacama and Tara.
Go climb a volcano (mainly Licancabur and Lascar).
Go see the stars at night.
Go see the sunset in Moon Valley.
Go see the unforgettable El Tatio’s geiser.
Go eat at La Cave (Toconao 447).
And go walk around this amazing city with very friendly people.
And after doing all that, go plan what you will do in your next visit to San Pedro. Because you’ll want to come back.

like landing on the moon. it is a mystery how anything ever survived in an environment so seemingly inhospitable to life.

San pedro is a great place to use as your base for day trips to the salar (salt flats) or sand dunes. The town itself is very quaint with dirt roads in the main areas and a church & square near the center of town. There are also tons of ‘community dogs’ around – well fed and the pets of everyone in town it seems.
I had friends that had been to San Pedro years ago and loved it because it was quiet and pretty remote. It seems to be getting a little less off the beaten path but definitely still worth visiting. I had a great time there.
