One month before...

I went to New York with my family the month before 9/11. We were originally supposed to go to NY during labor day weekend but my mom wanted to go earlier to celebrate her birthday. I got to see what it was like up there and I even remember the mall that was under the towers. I bought an N*sync cd there and I still have the receipt from there.

My senior class took a picture on Liberty Island right in front of the towers (which we had visited) that June preceding September 11th.

Happy Memories

I don’t think I will ever be able to go back to New York since the World Trade Center is not there. I vividly remember being about 6 and standing in the street in front of the towers as my dad asked which one I thought was taller. I also remember being on the viewing floor, leaning over the rail by one of the windows, and looking at the street below with my forehead pressed against the glass.

Windows on the world

The bar on the 107th floor of tower one was a regular weekend hang out for the Battery Park expats. Free to get in (99% of tourists queued for the observation deck in tower2) it had the best view of manhattan and the cocktails were superb. The day the towers were hit I had just landed back in London, leaving NYC the night before.

What can I say...

I used to go shopping here quite frequently as a kid. They had a three level Borders and I’ve always been obsessed with books. I could see towers across the river on 9/11 and it’s really affected Jersey as well as NYC, because a lot of people commuted there and went there all the time. So I admit I cried when I saw the commercial for the movie. So sue me. Oh and let me add that it’s tragic that the WTC has become, “The place where 9/11 happened” because for years it was “the mall” or “where I work” or “that restauraunt”, just a normal place, you know?

I went in 5th grade…way before 9/11. I remember going with my class and getting lost at the top. Taking pictures in the observation tower. It was so high it was just scary. I still have a coin from a penny that I made in a machine in the building. It’s sad that it’s no longer there.

Enjoy the sunset

What I liked was the restaurant bar at the top of one of the towers (I forgot the name, it’s a long time ago); prices too high to afford for me as a student except for just a glass of wine. I’d sit down at a table at the window in the early evening, and enjoy the sunset, making my wine last till it was dark.

The last time I went to this place

I never liked these buildings—the plaza around the WTC was always an empty expanse of unfriendly concrete. Still, I never expected them to be gone…

If anyone wants to see these buildings without seeing Ground Zero, the Skyscraper Museum has the original architect’s model on display.
