I was expecting more. I don’t know what exactly, but not this. It’s a pretty regular rock (the photos don’t lie). It sits in a pit with an elevated walkway and fences around it. The whole thing is ensconced in a protective and decorative structure that’s more attractive than the rock itself (how sad). Graffiti was apparently a problem, because pale remains could still be seen. You also wonder why that one rock is thought to be the real Plymouth Rock, when it’s just so darn ordinary. Overall, I’m happy to say that I saw it, but there are many other things I’d rather have seen in the area instead knowing what I now know.

Worth visiting!
I visited Plymouth Rock with Mrs. Viii in 1984. I was really excited to see it. I mean, after all I had been hearing about it since grade school. I had never seen a picture of it, so in my mind I had envisioned a grand outcropping of rock onto which the Pilgrims first set foot.
I must admit that I was a little bit disappointed to see how small it was. It was not at all like I had imagined.
I’ll bet that they have to tie it down at night to keep people from stealing it. :-)

It’s just a rock. And not a particularly big one at that. There are so many other things in Plymouth that are much more interesting. But I guess you have to go see it if you’re in Plymouth anyway, just to say you’ve seen it.

Worth visiting!
Worth visiting not because of the rock, that’s closed and it’s small, but because of the Plantation, the Mayflower ship and the town..that’s full of historical richness!!!

Looks like they hauled it out of someone’s front-yard landscaping or something. I was expecting like this huge rock jutting out into the sea. Or at least something that seemed distinguishable from any other ordinary rock you might find lying about. Plymouth is cool, but you can safely skip the rock, though it’s not like it’s hard to see it if you want, since it’s a small place.

Just to see such a symoblic piece of American history is worth the trip. A replica of the Mayflower is close by. The rock is in a protected area and you look down upon it. Stop by a see where it began.
