The highlight of my trip to Mexico last year was being able to experience El Dia de los Muertos in the flesh. Some might suggest going to a smaller town to do the midnight at a cemetery thing but if you are in DF, oh there are so many places to go! Ofrendas in the Zocalo are nice but super crowded. I recommend Coyoacan. We had a blast. There’s a famous fountain in the center of town but it was entirely covered in a giant ofrenda. Around this were many vendors of foods and goods. Hey, there’s even a Sanborn’s right there. Strangely, the atmosphere of the vendors reminded me of Santa Cruz, CA. It had that modern hippy kind of vibe. The town itself is nice and small enough to walk around easily but not as quaint as guide books make it out to be. If you’re vegetarian, I highly recommend Vege Taco. They have awesome imitacion carne asada.

Coyoacan is one of the most trendy areas of Mexico City. It is rich in history and one of it’s claims to fame is that it contains the home of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. The architecure, people and restaurants of this area are wonderful. It is a definite place to visit if you find yourself in Mexico City.
