A pretty tough climb.

I’ve hiked many higher, but not many tougher than this one. Be prepared for some scrambling! Beautiful views, challenging, great surrounding area. One of my favorite hikes.

Why I recommend this place to visitors

This is the end of the appellation trail, and the view is the greatest gift a hiker can get at the end of a 4 month journey.

A review of this place

I have climbed Mt Katahdin twice. Make sure you dress for any condition. Last time we climbed, it was warm at the bottom and windy and cold at the top, in the middle of August. For a roundtrip climb, hike in through Chimney Pond (there are several ways to get there) and either go up Cathedral trail or across Knife’s Edge or vice versa. It’s a beautiful climb. On a clear day you can see all the way to the Atlantic and Mt Washington.

The best trip ever

It’s the most memorable hike I have ever taken. If you’re lucky with the weather, then there’s nothing to beat it!

Incredible.

I went in the early fall. It was beautiful, I hiked about halfway up… Came face to face with a moose. THAT was interesting. Someday I would like to hike to the top of the mountain.

First backpacking trip

Maine is wild. Weather, terrain, and trail conditions conspire to test the new hiker. Mt. Katadhin in Baxter State Park is the state’s highest peak and the northern tip of the Appalachian Trail. Starting there, I hiked about 110 miles south with a friend. Man, were we bruised, blistered and black-fly bitten by the end. Lobsters never tasted so sweet. Recommended for car campers off the beaten path, or intermediate hikers.
