My Dad moved here about 4 years ago. His health hasn’t been too great lately and I want to go spend some time with him.

We camped at the aptly-named Sunset Bay state park, just south of Coos Bay. The campsite is very close to Shore Acres state park where we wandered through the beautiful rose gardens and other wonderfuly maintained botanical gardens in the cool twilight. There are also some small nature trails that are perfect for an afternoon stroll. And the sunset from Sunset Beach was just divine, as you can see. This was supposed to be just another place to pitch a tent on the last leg of an epic cross-country road trip, but it turned out to be one of the best stops because the beauty and tranquility was such a nice surprise.

We used to go there in the summers while visiting my family in Medford and Grants Pass. One of my mother’s favorite story to tell on me was how I almost drowned here! (grin it has a happy ending, obviously). I remember it as cold and grey and very mystical, but then I born and raised in the desert!

I grew up in this town of 15,000 on the Oregon Coast. As a kid there was not much to do here, everything was about 2-3 hours away in either Eugene or Grants Pass. As an adult there is a lot more to discover from the Botanical Gardens to the AWESOME beaches. Spend a couple of days in the area and you will definitely appreciate it.
